The Company

Karen (Date) Jones was born and educated in the Swansea Valley. On graduating she began her teaching career and for nine years she developed and became Head of Pre-Prep at  St.Michael’s Independent School in Llanelli.

Following many years of preparation Karen is delighted to introduce childcare and education of the highest quality to our under fives in the Swansea Valley.

Karen is dedicated to the idea that Little Steps will provide the community with the security of knowing that children in the care of the Little Steps team are treated with the utmost respect and cared for in a highly secure, happy and stimulating environment.

The Nursery is registered to provide ( ) places for children from 4 months to 5 years.

Karen has overall responsibility for the nursery. On a day to day day basis she has responsibility for the delivery of the 3-5 curriculum within a structure that maximises the personal interests of each child.

The day-to-day management of the nursery is given to the Nursery Manager. The Manager is responsible for ensuring that each day runs smoothly.

All activities at Little Steps are delivered through the medium of English.

Quality Care

The nursery is staffed by qualified early years practitioners. Our ratios are within those requires by the CSIW (Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales).

The nursery is organised into separate units according to the ages of the children, offering environments in which to learn and play.

The baby area has a ratio of one adult per three babies. There is a sleeping room within the baby area as well as a changing room and sensory area. All equipment and activities within this area are age appropriate. Although babies spend most of the time in their area we very much encourage times of the day to be set aside where babies can spend time amongst the older children.

The 2-3’s have their own special area within the nursery which contains age appropriate activities and equipment. This room is open-plan which allows the children supervised access to other areas of the nursery where they can develop their curiosity, their independence and their social skills.

When the children are approximately three years old, they move into the Foundation Stage group. At this point their development is overseen by a qualified early years teacher. In many cases this stage of a child’s life is seen very much as a preparation for school. At Little Steps we choose to celebrate the 3-5 years as a distinct phase of childhood where the world opens up to be explored and enjoyed!

We have a great outdoor space for the children to make their own. It is secure, shaded and is linked directly to the main building.

Key Workers

At Little Steps you will find a key worker system in place. This means that each child is linked to a specific member of staff on registering a place at nursery. This allows both families and staff to develop a strong, mutual bond regarding the well-being of the child.
It also allows the child to feel secure in the knowledge that their special person is there for them when they need them. Should a key worker be away from the nursery at any point a secondary person is immediately put in place.

Each family is introduced to their key worker on starting nursery. Time will be available for the key worker to get to know you and your child and if suitable a home visit can be arranged. This is an opportunity for families and staff to share important information regarding the child in order that the home nursery relationship has as many common threads as possible.

We are able to arrange a number of settling in visits to ensure a smooth transition to nursery for both children and their families.

  Partnership with parents

A Parents Handbook is provided, outlining the policies and Procedures for each family.

Each child has a homebook, in which their keyworker communicates what they have done during their day at nursery, including feeds and nappy changes. Families can feed their child’s experiences with their family back to their keyworker.

All children have a ‘Celebration of MyAchievements’ File, which tracks their development and interests through observations and provides families with detailed insight into their child’s progress. Families are encouraged to contribute through observations of their child at home.

Parents’ Evening are arranged twice a year, where individual appointments are offered. This is an opportunity to share some ‘quality time’ with your child’s key worker where questions can be answered and ideas shared.

Open mornings are arranged throughout the year where visitors are welcome to share the achievements of the children.

Special educational needs

The nursery has a designated Special educational Needs Co-Ordinator, supporting children, families and their keyworkers to ensure children who may have additional needs are receiving suitable support. This may come through activities, equipment or the involvement of specialist agencies.

Child Protection

Little Steps believes children have a right to feel safe at all times. All our staff  receive strict police checks, and the senior member of staff is responsible for overseeing the company’s Child Protection policy.

Activities

Young children are very creative beings: throughout the day we give children many opportunities to explore their creativity. People often presume that being creative should have an end result; however, we believe the adult should not determine the outcome of the experience for the child. The adult’s role is to provide for and to scaffold the children in their learning. We believe that the learning processes children go through in their play and activities are more important than the end product.

Play opportunities are provided for the children by familiar staff who observe and record the childrens’ interests and patterns of learning. Activities are specifically designed to meet each child’s individual needs and interests.

Trips & Visits

We organise a range of trips and visits and play outside throughout the year. Babies go for walks daily, and older children are given the opportunity to visit places of interest such as the library, the park or the local shops. Spontaneous walks occur when staffing ratios allow.

Food & Drinks

Mealtimes are seen as an important social time within the nursery. Children are encouraged to develop independence and social skills by choosing, selecting, pouring, cutting and serving for themselves and others. Menus are rotated regularly and take into account the nutritional needs of young children.

The children are seated in small groups, with an adult present to encourage and support them. Younger children who need assistance in cutting will always be presented with the complete meal before it is cut. Once the children have reached the age of two, they will be encouraged to help set tables, and serve themselves and others.

The cost of all food, drink and formula milk is included in the fees, as are all nappies and toiletries. Expressed breast milk can also be stored and given. Organic milk is provided for all children, once they have progressed onto cows milk. Children also have unlimited access to spring water dispensers.

So what do I do now?

You can look on our website for other information: www.littlestepschildcare.co.uk

If you would like to look around our nursery, contact Head Office on 01792 869494

If you have an idea of which days you require, this will help us ascertain availability of places. Once you have completed a registration form we can register your child’s place at the nursery, or enter them on the waiting list if the days you require are not yet available.

What if I want to increase or decrease my child’s booking?

Please contact Head Office who will be happy to help on 01792 869494

My child is allergic to dairy products; will the nursery be able to accommodate this?

All medical dietary requirements are catered for, as are any other individual needs your child may have. Your keyworker will be able to talk through how the nursery can best provide for your child’s individual needs.

How do I pay my fees?

A registration fee is payable to register your child’s place. Fees are payable monthly in advance, and can be paid by cheque, cash, standing order or direct debit. A holiday discount of 40% is given on all notified holidays. There are no charges for bank holidays

What do I need to bring to the nursery?

Families are asked to provide suitable clothing that will enable their child to experience all of the opportunites the nursery provides. Ample spare clothes must be clearly named and provided in a bag on your child’s coat peg. Wellington boots and suitable warm clothing are required for outdoor play in the winter, and sun hats and sun cream are essential for the summer.

What do I do if my child is poorly?

We are not able to undertake the care of sick children. In this instance, please phone the nursery to inform the staff of their absence. Due to staffing commitments we are unable to refund families for days absent due to sickness.

Can nursery staff administer medication?

Staff can only administer medicine prescribed by a medical practitioner. Children should be absent for at least 24 hours of any treatment, to allow their immune system to respond.

I am delayed at work and unable to collect my child; what should I do?

In order to protect your child, he/she can only be collected from the nursery by adults identified on the ‘All About Me ‘ form. Any adults on the all ‘About Me’ form that are unknown to staff will be asked to produce identification. Children who are collected after the stated opening hours will be asked to sign the late book, and the company reserve the right to charged an additional fee.

How do I register a concern or complaint to the registered person?

All complaints will be listened to, taken seriously and acted on. Should you wish to make a formal complaint about any aspect of Little Steps then please read carefully our complaints procedure located within the parents handbook (copies available from the Nursery Manager). You should then complete this form and submit it to the appropriate person as highlighted in our complaints procedure.
